Short answer

Restore your snapshot, pull members back, then run Restore Roles from the Pending Role Restore banner. RestoreCord re-maps saved roles to the new role IDs and holds them for 7 days. Integration-managed roles are skipped, so re-sync your subscription bot.

## Why paid roles don't simply carry over

In a paid community, a member without their role is a member who can't see what they paid for, and who will open a ticket within the hour. After a restore, getting roles right is as important as getting people back. The catch is technical: when a snapshot is restored, Discord creates every role again from scratch, and each new role gets a **new ID**. Old assignments point to IDs that no longer exist, so nothing transfers by itself.

## How RestoreCord re-maps them

During a restore, RestoreCord saves each member's role mapping and translates it to the restored role IDs. That mapping is held for **7 days** and appears in the dashboard as a **Pending Role Restore** banner showing how many members have roles waiting and when the data expires.

Step 1

Backup restore finishes

Roles are recreated with new IDs; each member's saved roles are re-mapped and queued for 7 days.

Step 2

Banner appears

“Pending Role Restore” shows on the dashboard with member and assignment counts.

Step 3

Pull members first

Roles can only be assigned to members already in the server.

Step 4

Run Restore Roles

Runs in the background at Discord-safe rates; cancel any time, assigned roles are kept.

## Do it in this order

| Step | Why it comes here |
| -------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 1\. Restore the snapshot | Creates the roles and channels members will be given |
| 2\. Pull members back | Discord can only give a role to someone who is already in the server |
| 3\. Run Restore Roles | Re-applies saved roles to everyone who has returned |
| 4\. Re-sync billing integrations | Lets your payment bot reclaim the roles it manages |

**Restore Roles** runs in the background, giving roles back gradually in batches so Discord's rate limits aren't hit. If you cancel it, roles already assigned stay assigned and the rest remain pending, so you can restart later. Anyone who hasn't returned yet when you run it stays pending as well, which is why you pull first and restore roles second.

## Subscription and billing bots

Many paid servers use an integration that hands out tier roles automatically when someone pays. Roles **managed by an integration** are reported as skipped in the restore modal, and that's deliberate. Reconnect that integration in the new server and let it re-sync, so payment status stays the single source of truth for who gets which tier.

## Bot permissions that trip people up

* Your bot needs the **Manage Roles** permission in the restored server.
* Deleting the pending role data is permanent, so leave it alone until the restore has finished.
* The bot's own role must sit **above** every paid role it assigns in the role list.
* Roles deleted after the restore can't be re-applied and are reported as skipped.

### Why are some roles missing permissions?

Discord bots can only assign roles positioned below their own role in the server hierarchy.

Move RestoreCord above Gold Tier

Go to **Server Settings** → **Roles** in Discord and drag **RestoreCord** above the role you want to assign.

Don't wait out the week. Start Restore Roles as soon as the bulk of your pull has finished, then run it again for late arrivals before the 7 days are up.

## Make it boring next time

Role restore only works if members can be pulled back, and that depends on them verifying beforehand. If you haven't already, read [how to keep paying members when your server dies](https://restorecord.vip/keep-paying-members), keep the [subscriber outage playbook](https://restorecord.vip/paid-server-outage-playbook) handy, or return to [RestoreCord VIP](https://restorecord.vip/).

## Give every subscriber their tier back

1. 1
### Rebuild from your snapshot
Rebuild channels and roles in the new or cleaned server.
2. 2
### Bring subscribers back in
Start a member pull so verified subscribers are in the server again.
3. 3
### Start the role restore
Open the Pending Role Restore banner and start it. Roles are re-applied gradually to respect Discord's limits.
4. 4
### Re-sync billing roles
Reconnect your subscription integration for any roles it manages.
